Quino (Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón)

Spanish-Argentinian vignettist, born in 1937.

His most famous comic strip is Mafalda, which was originally intended to be a character for an advertising campaign. Mafalda was born in 1963 and Quino kept on drawing it for 10 years. He stopped in 1973.

In 1977, UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) asks Quino to use Mafalda and her friends to defend the ten principles of the Declaration of the rights of the Child. In November, 2009, UNICEF ESPAÑA (the Spanish branch) awards Quino a prize for his contribution to the defence of children’s rights.

It has been translated to more than 30 languages throughout these years.

Why do people still like Mafalda 40 years later? Because defiance has no expiration date. Even nowadays, her protest against censorship and her attitude in favour of democracy and women’s social progress are gaining relevance and turn Mafalda into a generations’ avatar, who quote her sayings and take them as a symbol.
